Can You See My Eyes?

When my children were young, we would be in church, a store, or just in public in general, and when they started to misbehave, I only needed to give them “the look” for them to realize that they had better shape up and get in line.  Even now they joke about “the eyebrow” that I would raise, and they knew exactly what that meant! They all knew the consequences when we got home if they had not heeded my raised eyebrow.  But not just anyone could give them that look and they obey it. A stranger could’ve done the same thing I did, but my children would not have responded because they didn’t know that person. Even a casual acquaintance could not have ushered a response out of my children, but as their mother, they were quick to obey my look or even a glance with a raised eyebrow, because they knew me and knew what that look meant. My look didn’t always have to do with discipline or correction. There were often times when my children just needed my encouragement or affirmation, and may look to them at those times would speak volumes of my love and belief in them, all without speaking a word.Psalm 32:8-9 (TPT) tells us of a similar relationship between God and His children:

“I hear the Lord saying, ‘I will stay close to you, instructing you and guiding you along the pathway for your life. I will advise you along the way and lead you forth WITH MY EYES AS YOUR GUIDE. So don’t make it difficult, don’t be stubborn when I take you where you’ve not been before.  Don’t make me tug you and pull you along. Just come with me!’”

Our Heavenly Father operates the same way I operate with my children, and most probably, you operate with your children: He guides us with His eyes.

How do we know the eyes of God?  How do we see what He is trying to tell us through His eyes?

While we might not see the actual eyes of God, we do have a sense of when He’s leading and guiding us through the peace of God. His peace that “transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds” (Phil. 4:7). It is His peace that leads and guides us. Not chaos, not confusion, not doubt or worry, but God’s peace! In order for my children to see my eyes in giving them instruction or affirmation, they had to be close enough to me to see me. And so it is with God. We have to be close enough to Him-- to “see” His eyes-- to sense His peace as we walk out this journey of life.God also says to us through this Psalm to “not make it difficult, don’t be stubborn when I take you where you’ve not been before.  Don’t make me tug and pull you along…” We’ve all seen the parents who struggle and fight with their children to get them to do something or to stop doing something, and we want to pull our hair out as those parents keep wrestling with those children to get them to obey.  But often times, we aren’t too different when God is trying to lead and guide us to a better life, a more peaceful road, or even a greater purpose and destiny that we can see at the moment.Don’t make it difficult for Him. Don’t be stubborn. Don’t be afraid when He’s trying to lead you to a better place, a more peaceful place. Allow God to “guide you with His eyes” because He’ll always lead you to what is best for you. Don’t fight Him. Trust Him. Trust His heart for you, trust His timing for you, and trust that He can see much further than you can see right now.

What decisions are you faced with? Is there confusion and chaos surrounding that decision, or is the peace of God comforting your heart?

If you love God, are committed to His greater purposes and plans for your life, and desire to please Him above all others, then you won’t make a mistake. Allow the peace of God to lead and guide you, allow His eyes to show you the way in which you are to walk, and trust Him that where He is leading you is GOOD.Stay close enough to Him that His eyes/peace can guide you, then trust Him to do just that!
